Jumulu is the Gija word for Boab tree. The Gija are indigenous Australians from the Kimberley region near Warnum in Western Australia.
In July 2008 Gija Jumulu, a boab tree, was transported 3,200 kilometres from Telegraph Creek in the Kimberley to Kings Park in Perth. This was the longest journey of a similar sized tree in history.
The 35-tonne tree is estimated to be 750 years old, boabs are believed to live up to 2,000 years.
The boab tree is an iconic Australian tree, its nuts, leaves and roots have been essential source of 'bush tucker' for generations of Aboriginal people, it has been referred to as the tree of life.
